The Dancing Queen Turns 50

9/6/2026

The “Dancing Queen” just turned 50, but she’s not a person. It’s a song people have loved since August 4, 1976. That’s when “Dancing Queen” hit #1 on the UK Singles Chart. It held that position for six weeks.

“Dancing Queen” went on to become Abba’s signature hit, topping their other #1s, “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Fernando.” You can still hear it at weddings and on karaoke nights. It’s a classic, and one of my all-time favorites!

Part 1: The Dancing Queen’s Back Story

When you hear the intro, I bet you can name it in 3-5 notes. It’s that recognizable! So, how did Björn and Benny come up with the music? They had two mentors.

The first, George McCrae, famous for 1975s “Rock Your Baby.” I didn’t remember his name or the title. When I googled and listened, I recognized it right away. I bet you will too!

Google didn’t help me with the second one. It was Dr. John’s “Gumbo” from 1972. Back then I was in 8th grade, and my parents controlled the radio, so I don’t remember it at all.

Both mentor songs came from the US, but the article said “Dancing Queen” had a European sound. Really? I was 17 when it came out, and I only cared about turning into a dancing queen myself.

Fun Fact: “Dancing Queen” was almost named “Boogaloo.” The group’s manager, Stig Anderson, suggested the new title, and Abba agreed. Thank goodness!

The group recorded it in August 1975. When Björn and Benny finished the studio work, they rushed home to share it. Benny said Frida cried and called it beautiful. Agnetha was asleep so Björn played it for his sister, over and over again. It was that good!

Abba released “Dancing Queen” in 1976, and the rest is history. It became a worldwide hit, in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and Norway.

Part 2: The Dancing Queen’s Story Today

Fast forward, this is Abba in 2021, in the same order as the photo from the 70s. From left: Benny Anderson, Frida Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog, and Björn Ulvaeus, but the group broke up, right? They did, in late 1982, and they refused to work together, until now.

Since the 90s, Abba has been asked to perform, and they have refused every single offer. In 2000 they were offered $1 billion. Björn said, “There is simply no motivation to re-group."

Wow! For a cool $250 million (1/4 of that billion), I could put up with almost anyone for a couple of hours. But the musical Mama Mia came out in 1999. It probably made it easy for Björn to say no. Then in 2008, the musical became a movie. BTW, I loved both.

Can you find the four original members of Abba in 2008? They’re mixed in with the actors from the movie, Mama Mia? Benny is on the far left. The fifth from the left is Agnetha. Her hand’s on Frida’s shoulder. And Björn, he’s the second from the right.

In 2015, the “Dancing Queen” joined the Grammy Hall of Fame, probably because it’s one of the best pop songs ever. The words and music are still catchy. I remember how they made me feel in 1976 when I was 17. Now that I’m in my 60s, it brings back great memories.

The “Dancing Queen” has been performed by rock stars like Bono and two members of Metallica. Elvis Costello actually put some of its chords into a song. Back in the 70s, people who played rock didn’t play disco.

Now, back to that 2021 photo. Björn finally found the motivation for the group to appear onstage together. This is a curtain call they pre-recorded for the end of their Voyage concerts. That’s the only time it plays, and this is the only way Abba will get together again.
Why? The concerts are virtual…they use avatars to showcase the band the way they looked in 1979. They also use Abba’s original vocals from back then too. The only thing live, the 10-piece band onstage. The concerts are so successful they’re still playing now in 2026.

When I write, I can only have one voice in my head, mine.  A little noise is fine.  But too much, or worse yet, WORDS, and I must change rooms or pull out headphones.  Then I can write on!
