What Do They Do with All That Poo?
Written by Jane Kurtz
Illustrated by Allison Black
Grade Level: P – 3

I went to the zoo this week, but never thought about poop. This title asks  a fascinating question. Did you know that zoos have over 5000 pounds of poop to get rid of every week? That’s a lot of poop!

The 1st half talks about  zoo animals and the poop they produce. Did you know that giraffes have 4 stomachs to help them digest their food efficiently? That’s why it looks like little marbles. Pandas only digest 17% of their food so bamboo leaves and stems pass out quickly. I don’t even want to imagine . . . YUCK!

The 2nd half shows you what zoos do with their poop. Some of it winds up in landfills. Sometimes zoos pay to get rid of it. Some scientists study it, but yuckiest of all, some people, like those scientists, actually pay for it. TRIPLE YUCK – but – TRIPLE fascinating!

Whenever I read or write, I find a comfy chair with a great view.  I get my favorite drink, stretch out, and let the words take me away.
